The challenge

A combined heat and power plant wanted to extend the monitoring of its steam-water chemistry by adding online conductivity and pH measurement. Samples are drawn from various points in the cycle at temperatures up to 320 °C and pressures up to 180 bar. To allow accurate analysis, every sample has to be cooled reliably to around 25 °C, regardless of seasonal variation in the available cooling water temperature. An earlier installation based on single-coil coolers consistently failed to meet specification during summer operation.

The solution

Gommer redesigned the sampling panel around a combined set of sample coolers tailored to each measurement point:

• Dr. Thiedig PE 02 high-pressure sample coolers on the points with the highest thermal load, equipped with both a primary and an after-cooler coil to deliver a stable outlet temperature;
• Dr. Thiedig PE 03 on the lower-pressure measurement points such as the condensate;
• Gommer dual coil cooler M80.00.00 in SS316/316L for the routine grab-sampling stations, including the integrated Rotoball 2-way low-profile ball valve rated to 400 bar.

The complete panel was pre-assembled and pressure-tested in Voorburg, including all tubing, venting, and thermal insulation, so commissioning on-site was reduced to connecting utilities and signal wiring.

The result

Sample outlet temperatures now stay within ± 2 °C of setpoint year-round, including warm summer periods. As a result, the online cation conductivity readings have become a reliable trigger for corrosion monitoring, and operators no longer need to apply manual temperature corrections. The panel has now been in service for two years without unplanned downtime.
